Description of course
This course is designed to introduce students to the scientific study of social structure (human social behavior). The content that will be covered includes but is not limited to the following areas: history of sociology, social research methods, impact of culture, socialization in relationship to the family, peers, school, and media, social inequalities for gender, age, race, social institutions and changes in society.
Text and methodology
We will use the textbook, Sociology and You published by Glencoe in 2008.
A variety of methods are used to help students begin to understand sociology. It can but is not limited to the following:
1. Cooperative learning
2. Videos
3. Sociology labs
4. Computer research and simulations
5. Discussion
6. Notetaking
Grading and Assignments
I will use the following items to help assess student understanding and learning.
1. Sociology lab reports
2. Writing assignments
3. Vocabulary activities and definitions
4. Tests
5. Group projects
6. PowerPoint Projects
Tests will make up approximately 40% of the total grade.
All other assignments make up approximately 60% of the total grade.
Semester grades: Quarter 1--40%, Quarter 2--40%, Semester Test--20%
Extra note: A student may be eligible for an exemption from the semester exam.
Supplies needed
Notebook or binder to keep notes, folder to store worksheets, writing utensils, highlighter, access to a computer
Late and make-up work
Late assignments are accepted but the grade will be reduced by two letter grades. Assignments are due at the beginning of class when I ask for it. I will only accept make-up work for the previous unit. If not turned in, it is a zero. This provides for approximately 7-10 days to complete make-up work. Ultimately, it is the student’s responsibility to check the make-up work binder, get the missing assignments, and turn the assignments in.
Grading Scale
100-92=A
91-83 = B
82-74 = C
73-65 = D
64-0 = F
